4 Fun Facts About the Flatiron Building

4 Fun Facts About the Flatiron Building
Eric Shapiro

New York City’s Flatiron Building is one of the most beautiful buildings to visit and photograph in the entire city. Whether it’s set against a bright blue sky or misty rain, the Flatiron has a regal elegance that translates into breathtaking photos. Every so often, we like to stop and think about a magnificent structure it’s all too easy to take for granted, especially if, like us, you see it every day.

Here are four facts you might not know about the Flatiron Building:

  • It has an impressively long history. Construction was completed in 1902, making it one of the city’s oldest icons. The Chrysler Building wasn’t finished until 1930, and the Empire State Building was completed the next year, in 1931.
  • The Flatiron Building is only 22 stories tall. It’s technically a skyscraper, but still seems small amidst the other towering giants of NYC. By comparison, the Empire State Building has 108 stories, and One World Trade Center has 94.
  • It’s as skinny as it looks. The offices at the narrow end of the building are just over six feet wide!
  • It stirred up a bit of controversy. Like so many innovative buildings, the Flatiron’s construction was met with a chorus of critics. It was the first triangular skyscraper, and many had doubts that the building would withstand a strong gust of wind.

The Flatiron Building itself is only one of the neighborhood’s many draws. With world-class eateries, exciting activities, and gorgeous architecture at every turn, there’s never a dull moment.
