It’s that Holiday time of year again, and the Flatiron Public Plazas can be counted on to display its usual cornucopia of interesting and striking holiday treats and events  to all comers as the “23 Days of Flatiron Cheer” Campaign kicks off!  As befits the Flatiron District’s role and growing reputation as a hub of digital media and funky technology and design,  the Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership, manager of the Public Plazas as our much appreciated BID, in conjunction with the Van Alen Institute and DOT Art, unveiled the winner of its second annual Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition – “Nova” by SOFTlab! This striking piece of Techno-Art has been slowly taking shape before our eyes the last few days, and it was opened to a curious public this past Wednesday evening, alongside the BID’s usual opening party (complete with hot chocolate and other treats!) for the Partnership’s “Days of Cheer” Campaign for 2015!

This year’s Holiday Exhibit is sure to attract it’s share of attention, particularly from the kids and techno-inclined – as one approaches the metallic structure – which looks like nothing as much as a “Jack Kirby”-esque piece of sublime techno-machinery kitsch from the pages of Fantastic Four or the New Gods Comics! Could it be that a trip into this funky structure could be a trip into the negative zone or boom-tube, or some other dimension? Come see for yourself! I took a quick look, along with some of my fellow Flatiron Denizens early this morning – and upon inspection as one entered into the hi-tech structure, one was presented with a kaleidescopic view of reflected colors and images that seemed to veer off into infinity! One can approach the object-d’arte from virtually any side, and see one’s self reflected, as well as the sidewise images of many of our favorite Flatiron Landmarks! Well worth a look if you pass by the South Plaza in the next 23 Days of Cheer, as you take part in many of the other planned festivities! If not, take a quick look at the Flatiron Hot! Video Clip so you don’t miss this special visual treat!
