Flatiron Hot! News had the pleasure of interviewing noted diet, fitness, and wellness evangelist Patricia Greenberg, author of Eat Well, Live Well, Age Well, on the challenge of living a better lifestyle no matter one’s age and physical condition. This is something that busy and peripatetic Flatiron denizens often strive for, but rarely succeed at, as our neighborhood is full of busy overachievers whose time is at a premium.

The conversation started off on a timely footing, as it was coincidentally Patricia’s 62nd birthday. As a living embodiment of the power of her own own lifestyle theories, Patricia related to us that she had just celebrated by climbing the Statue of Liberty and barely missed a beat, or broke a sweat. We asked Patricia a few questions surrounding her lifestyle and the inspiration for her book.

Flatiron Hot News:  How do diet, exercise, and clean living as related in the book work together to help our Flatiron neighbors improve their life?

Patricia tells us, in the most common sense manner, that “ … any movement at all is critical, and to turn our everyday opportunities to do just that” into wellness opportunities. This includes, for example, climbing the stairs instead of taking the the elevator, if only just part of the way up to your destination. Or, it could be as simple as getting up from your desk or your couch for a walk to Madison Square Park and (literally) touching the plants, trees, and flowers in our wonderful park!

In addition, Patricia notes that eating right is all about balance. For example, she advises taking sugar out of your diet and keeping your salt intake low whenever possible. In this neighborhood, there are so many wonderful options to choose from, as Flatiron is the “fast-casual” capital of the world, with vegan, Middle Eastern, Italian, and continental cuisine just a stone’s throw from where we work and play. Choose a restaurant and include a balance of fruits and vegetables to compliment your meals. Set yourself up with healthy snacks, even if that’s just an apple in your bag. Food is something we should still be able to enjoy as we train ourselves to live a healthy lifestyle.

One example of a classic traditional pastry that fits this description which we found on Patricia’s website is a “Tofu” Cheesecake! Simply take the usual cheesecake recipe, and replace sour cream and cream cheese with soy equivalents – this will turn this diet-busting favorite into something that fits the bill for a nutritious snack according to Patricia’s principles! Or another such healthy and satisfying dish we found on her website is Carrot Ginger Soy Soup. “Easy, anti-inflammatory” and guaranteed to help us shine as we age! These are just two examples of her approach.

Flatiron Hot! News:  What’s special about your book? What can your readers take from it? Why did you write it?

PG: “ … I was not an athletic child. I was overweight, a typical Long Island kid. I didn’t feel good about my size …  In college, I switched to a nutrition major and shortly went into the business …”

“  … From there I was a dietician, then a nutritionist for restaurants, then finally into fitness. Overall, it’s taken me 18 years to write this book … “

“  … I wanted to write on how to age well and how to sustain health and maintain your weight. I truly believe you can change your lifestyle at any age. I’m a big advocate for aging peacefully. Be filled with joy and do what you want to do. Don’t fight aging but find peers that you can age with, and don’t be afraid of the ads that make us insecure about the process of aging … It’s natural to age, not scary … it’s part of life!”

Patricia’s passion for aging peacefully shined through in her talk with us at Flatiron Hot! News. That trot up those Lady Liberty stairs, if anything, left her energized and utterly believable as an advocate!  Yes, so often in our busy Flatiron day-to-day lives, we forget to take a moment to, literally, smell (or touch!) the roses and  take care of our health. The right choices don’t have to mean extravagant gym memberships, but smartly incorporating the small things in one’s daily life.
