The perpetually bemoaned New York City subway system is getting a much-needed upgrade this year, but the journey there will be a trying experience for frequent riders.

Repair Work – F train at 23rd Street Closed July 23rd thru December 2018

In April, the MTA Board approved a round of contracts that would close three stations in Manhattan and limit accessibility to a fourth. The stations to be completely closed are 57th St. (F), 23rd St. (F, M), and 28th St. (6), and 34th St. Penn Station (A, C, E and 1, 2, 3) will see its entrances closed one at a time. Critical problems in infrastructure will be fixed, new materials and designs will be added to reduce maintenance costs going forward, pervasive leaks will be sealed to stop ongoing water damage, and the stations will be aggressively cleaned to remove debris and reduce fire hazards. Other concerns to be addressed include damaged stairs, crumbling ceilings, worn yellow platform edges, and paint and chewing gum on concrete surfaces. On a more captivating note, in addition to these “bread and butter” fixes, the stations will also receive modern aesthetics that will enhance customers’ experiences. Subway entrances will feature plinths that supply important information, such as the time the next train will arrive and rerouting updates. The aim is to leave the stations cleaner, brighter, and easier to navigate.

For guests of NYCSCC, the closure of the F and M stop at 23rd Street, located just steps away, will be a slight annoyance. It will close July 23rd and reopen in December. However, there are many alternative service options available during the shutdown. One block to the east is the N and R stop at 23rd St and 5th Avenue, and one block in the opposite direction is the 1 train 23rd St. stop. The C or E train to 23rd Street stops 2 blocks west of the center, and the 6 train 23rd St. stop is 3 blocks east. There are also many bus options, including the M1, M2, M3, M55, M7, and M23. Of course, walking aficionados can get off the F at either 14th St. or 34th St. and walk the few blocks to 23rd Street.
