Poster House: Explore the Impact, Culture, and Design of Posters

If you love art, museums, and a modern atmosphere, Poster House is the place for you! Located on 23rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, it is right across the street from the NYC Seminar and Conference Center. The Poster House is a great place to roam around during your lunch break or after your meeting. You can even enjoy coffee or lunch at their cafe. If you are looking for a souvenir, stop by the gift shop selling art books, trendy accessories for the home, and jewelry. There are two exhibits currently featured, “Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau/Nouvelle Femme,” and “Designing Through the Wall: Cyan in the 1990s.” Both exhibits will be displayed until October 6, 2019. As always, thank you to the Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership for sharing these exciting events with us!

The exhibits are carefully organized, informative, and visually pleasing. Art lines the walls without  feeling overcrowded. In many instances, the art installations are complemented by a background wall color or design. In the Alphose Mucha exhibit, there are decorative white columns lining one side of the exhibit that add to the style and flare of the artwork. Be sure to pick up an activity card at each of the exhibits, further explaining the art or a coloring activity. Despite being located in a small building, it feels like a mainstream museum.

If you need a break from looking at posters, Poster House has got you covered. After you see the two exhibits, they have a make-your-own poster activity that teaches you all about the different types of posters, what various symbols mean, information on color psychology, and typography. Plus, it’s really fun and you have a chance to be creative.

If you want to bring your family, don’t hesitate because they have ample entertainment for kids – who even get free entry. In addition to activity cards and the interactive installations, their downstairs room is designed as a children’s play area. Ask in advance for some dry-erase markers, and children can enjoy coloring New York’s cityscape. They also have an interactive phone and news stand as well as fun interactive posters.

Some additional highlights are their café which carries a variety of gluten-free and vegan options, the gift shop which is well-kept, aesthetic, and contains some rare pieces – even these earrings from the 80’s! They have multiple cool learning opportunities such as drawing classes based on the exhibitions, starting mid-August, that you can book in advance at this link.

If you’re looking for a quick, fun, educational, and family-friendly experience in NYC Poster House is the perfect option. The entire staff was super friendly and helpful, making our experience even more pleasurable. I would recommend Poster House to my friends and family of all ages. Visit their website, email (info@posterhouse.org), or call at (917) 722-2439, for more information.
