Take Care of Your Knees and Shoulders – New Tome Gives advice for Weekend Warriors, Parents, and the (Occasionally) Active – “The Knee and Shoulder Handbook”

Friend of the Blog Patricia Greenberg passed on to us a terrific book for us weekend warriors and parents with active kids, with terrific reference about the maintenance of our knees and shoulders that is out in print. I had a chance to thumb through it, and it follows up on the previous themes that Patricia has promoted in some earlier posts – take care of your bods, and know what to do, and that’s what “The Knee and Shoulder Handbook” delivers on. Dr. Alan Reznik’s recent tome, which I had a chance to thumb through, is chock full of useful information about how to take care of our bods -including, most critically, the knees and shoulders! So, for all Flatiron Denizen’s and weekend warriors huffing and puffing and trying to stay in shape, here’s some useful info about this very worthy book!

Dr. Reznik is a Board-Certified Orthopedic surgeon specializing in Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Medicine. He is also recognized as one of “America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America, and takes care to educate and empower readers on improving and safeguarding orthopedic health including preteens in junior leagues, to young adults in collegiate sports, to active adults and seniors.

From Dr. Reznick’s Press Release:

Some of the most common sources of chronic pain occurs in the shoulders or knees. Sometimes the pain is a result of a past childhood orthopedic injury or a new pain that seems to keep occurring whenever you engage in a physical activity. If you are burdened by agonizing chronic pain in your shoulders or knees, then The Knee and Shoulder Handbook: The Keys to A Pain-Free, Active Life is a good resource.

The authoritative book educates and informs readers how to improve and safeguard your orthopedic health using easy to understand photos, illustrations, and informed sound medical advice. Plus, Dr. Reznik provides a deep dive into preventative care and explains the mysteries of available surgical and non-surgical treatments. The goal is to help guide the reader on the best path toward feeling strong and healthy.

Dr. Reznick has this to say about general orthopedic health overall:

  • Maintain Good Posture and Balance: Combat poor posture from screen use, prioritize ergonomic work setups, and encourage outdoor exercise for better sleep and musculoskeletal health.
  • Add Balance Exercises: Prevent arm and shoulder injuries in young athletes with improved hip control and balance through balance exercises.
  • Eat Right for Strong Bones: Ensure a balanced diet with calcium, vitamin D, and nutrients for bone health, including dairy, greens, and lean proteins.
  • Exercise Regularly: Diversify workouts with aerobic, strength, and flexibility exercises to strengthen muscles, balance bone strength, and maintain joint flexibility.
  • Include Warm-ups and Stretching: Prevent injuries with proper warm-ups and regular exercises for flexibility and conditioning.
  • Play safely by using protective gear, seeking medical advice for injuries, and following treatment plans. Lead by example to create a family culture that values orthopedic health.
